“It’s about movement. Exploring shapes, textures….."
The feeling of the brush touching clean, white paper, and leaving its mark. The sense of going on a journey, not quite knowing where the brush is going to take me.
Letting the subconscious play its part, and limiting conscious decisions. It’s about letting things unfold, and at certain times, as little as possible, making conscious decisions.
Going with the feeling, not suppressing curiosity, being curious.
The lines have their own rhythm and energy.
The colour comes from trying to create a sense of mood or atmosphere, recalling some past experience or event.
Sitting down in front of the blank, clean page is both exciting and daunting. Exciting because of the possibilities that exist, and daunting because it’s hard to know where and how to start.
Much of my work is about contrast. The crisp outlines, silhouettes, colours resting next to one another. The idea of creating depth by layering, movement on top of one another.
Playing with light, contrasting the different shades of black & white. A feeling of intimacy and when drawing the human form/body. ” It’s kind of ultimate art of drawing, where it all starts. The learning of line, form, tone and expression.”
Drawn to the dynamic movement of the model, deliberately leaving areas unresolved to allow the viewer to complete the picture in their own minds.
Prices for this collections are between NZ$110 - $170, unframed.
Getting your hands dirty!
Feeling the charcoal in your fingers. Pushing, pulling, smudging it across the page. Paring down the process to the basics: a stick of charcoal and a piece of paper. Free from the distractions of colour. The moulding of shapes, as if done by hand. The sensuality of a curve.
The use of paper is a deliberate decision to create space around the object/subject so that it is pure. Clean, crisp edges, uncluttered, open, not closed in.
Natures colour combinations. Endless combinations of light, colour and form.
These paintings were inspired by a summer workshop held over a week in Whangarei, NZ. Based on my photographs taken of the local boat building area, they are the exploration of colour, form and texture.
I am not trying to replicate the photographical image, but rather use the framework of the photo to play with paint and colour.
What’s around the corner?
The photos are driven by a sense of adventure and exploration. Discovering different shapes and forms of what surrounds us. They are a fascination with the natural world. Sometimes monumental, and sometimes delicate.
